  1. Well said Mark. Thank you for clearly describing what is happening. We are praying for the Coptic church in Egypt and other persecuted people around the world. We will also continue to speak the truth in love to see the captives set free!

  2. Part of the historical tragedy of the Copts is that they did not resist the Muslim invasion when it came in the 7th century. They were so focused on their quarrel with the Byzantines that they perceived the Muslims almost as liberators. Now they live as a persecuted minority in their own homeland.

It strikes me that the modern political division of Left and Right is having a similar effect in that much of the Left seems to have embraced the Muslims as allies in an imaginary struggle against the ghost of Adolf Hitler. They are so focused on this Hitler obsession that it bereaves them of their rational faculties and renders them incapable of apprehending the true threat to their own interests and principles.

  3. Ceradenine - the Copts did resist at first, but the massacres inflicted upon them (e.g at Nikiou) were horrific. That intimidated them into surrender.

  6. Universalgeni - not quite. Many of the Muslims are descended from Copts who converted somewhere along the way.

  7. Sent here from an article in the UK which speaks very highly of you Dr. Durie. And from what I've read I can see no reason whatsoever to disagree.

  8. OK. Mark Durie says many Muslims in Egypt descended from Copts. I'll moderate myself a bit: the majority of the muslims are really (descendants of) immigrants. Hope that's better. I realise that I should have had a source here. :-)

  9. It appears Muslims expect Copts to abide by the dhimma pact. The Copts then have two choices stay and comply or leave. The latter I suspect was the original intent of the dhimma pact. Is there a way the pact can be declared null and void as an ancient agreement that has no place in modern society?

The U.S. government is afraid of working directly with persecuted Christians in Iraq and Syria because it does not want to be branded as a "crusader army," according to Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom director Nina Shea.
